To use an AED, you must first turn it on by pulling a handle or pushing the “on” button on the unit. Once turned on, it will then give you voice prompts to follow. Before using, make sure you remove all clothing from the chest, abdomen, and arms for both males and females. Peel the pads off and place them as directed. It’s important not to touch the patient during this time. If the AED advises that a shock is necessary, push the button when prompted.
It’s important that you ensure safe procedures and don’t touch the patient while administering the shock and that the patient is not touching metal or water. It’s also important to make sure the patient doesn’t have a nitro patch and if they have a pacemaker, try not to place the pads over the unit.
The AED will shock multiple times. Newer units will shock once then instruct you to perform CPR.
AED training is part of our CPR course and could be the key to saving lives at your place of business.
